Tobe Hooper's original Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of the most viscerally uncomfortable films ever made, and its color is central to why. The bleached Texas summer, the rotting browns of the farmhouse, the heat-haze that makes everything look slightly unreal. The film was shot in 16mm at the height of summer and the footage looks sweat-soaked, as if the heat itself is wrong. Subsequent sequels have struggled to replicate this accidental naturalism.
