Zhang Yimou studied color theory before filmmaking, and it shows. His early films with cinematographer Zhang Yimou, Red Sorghum, Raise the Red Lantern, Ju Dou, used intense primary colors, especially red, as symbols of desire, tradition, and oppression. Hero pushed further, using color as chapter headings: different palette, different version of the truth.
