Wong Kar-wai's films are built from underexposed film and saturated primaries that bleed into shadow, time slowed to a blur of motion and neon. In the Mood for Love is all deep reds and greens, colors that feel trapped in the same cramped stairwell as the characters. 2046 pushed that palette further into abstraction, until his images start to feel less like cinematography and more like the memory of color itself.
