Wenders' Paris, Texas defined a certain American color. The bleached pinks and turquoises of the roadside Southwest, landscapes so sun-struck that color almost disappears into white. Wings of Desire's black-and-white Berlin contrasted against the warm color perceived by those still alive. He photographs longing as a quality of light.
