Craven understood that horror's power comes from the corruption of the familiar, and his color work reflects this. A Nightmare on Elm Street's suburban greens and yellows make its nightmare intrusions more violent by contrast. Scream's self-aware horror parody uses the same palette as the films it references. He photographed safety, then removed it.
