Herzog's relationship with color is as uncompromising as everything else about him. Fitzcarraldo's overwhelming greens of the Amazon reduce human ambition to its proper scale. Aguirre's jungle is darker, more threatening. His documentaries often find unexpected beauty in extreme environments: the electric blues of glaciers in Encounters at the End of the World, the volcanic reds of Into the Inferno.
