Malick's later films dissolved conventional narrative structure and replaced it with something closer to pure color and light. The Tree of Life's golden Texas summers and the cosmos's cold blues exist within the same film as spiritual opposites. Emmanuel Lubezki's natural-light photography gives Malick's palettes an evanescent quality, as if the colors themselves are memory, already fading.
