Corman's Poe adaptations with Vincent Price, shot quickly and cheaply on studio sets, used color as pure expressionist shorthand. The deep reds and purples of Usher's decaying world, the medieval warmth of The Pit and the Pendulum. He gave a generation of filmmakers their first lessons in how color could compensate for limited resources.
