Altman and cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond created the look of 1970s American cinema. The zoom lens, the overlapping sound, and a warm, slightly overexposed color that felt like eavesdropping. McCabe and Mrs. Miller's blizzard whites and firelit interiors, Nashville's flag-bright Americana. His color was democratic: no shot privileged over another, no color more important.
