Jackson and cinematographer Andrew Lesnie built Middle-earth around a deliberate color morality. The Shire's greens and golds represent safety and plenty. Rivendell's silver-blue calm suggests ancient wisdom. Mordor's volcanic reds and ashen greys make evil visible from the horizon. His King Kong and early splatter films showed a different palette: the lurid, practical colors of body horror.
