Baumbach's color palette has evolved toward an elevated naturalism. The warm New York apartment light of Marriage Story, the New Jersey browns of The Squid and the Whale. His collaboration with Greta Gerwig on Barbie, photographed in the most deliberately artificial pink imaginable, showed a filmmaker comfortable working against his own instincts for strange and specific effect.
