Refn's films are built on neon. The hot pinks and purples of Drive, Only God Forgives' blood-red Bangkok, the fluorescent whites of The Neon Demon. He works with his cinematographers to create images that feel printed rather than photographed, each frame calibrated to a specific emotional frequency. Color is never illustrative in his work. It is the entire substance.
