Nichols brought a stage director's sense of composition and color to Hollywood. The Graduate's primary-colored California surfaces against its undertow of dissatisfaction, Carnal Knowledge's cooler, more alienated palette, Working Girl's corporate blues and greys. His collaborations with Sven Nykvist gave even his lighter work an unexpected visual depth.
