Russell's films are chromatic explosions. The Devils' blinding whites and reds of religious ecstasy and torture, Tommy's pop-art saturations, Altered States' psychedelic hallucinations. He came from television and brought with it a love of bold, anti-naturalistic color that made his work look unlike anything else in British cinema of the period.
