Tourneur's genius was in darkness. What you don't see in Cat People is more frightening than what you do, and his blacks are absolute. Out of the Past's noir shadows defined a visual grammar. His color work, like The Flame and the Arrow and his westerns, showed equal facility with warmth and light. He understood that shadow only works against something bright.
