Bergman was reluctant to leave black and white, the form that gave him The Seventh Seal and Persona. When he did embrace color, in Cries and Whispers and Fanny and Alexander, the results were extraordinary. The former drenched in deep red as the color of the body's suffering, the latter warm with the amber light of childhood and memory.
