Maddin works in deliberate pastiche of silent and early sound cinema. Nitrate decay, tinted and toned black and white, expressionist shadow. When color appears in his work it carries the weight of artifice: the lurid hand-tinted hues of early cinema projected onto domestic and mythological narratives simultaneously. My Winnipeg's blue-tinged nostalgia makes a city into a dream and a prison.
