Jarman was a painter before a filmmaker, and every frame shows it. Caravaggio's chiaroscuro recreations, the acid blues of The Angelic Conversation, and his final film Blue, seventy-nine minutes of a single shade of International Klein Blue accompanied by a dying man's voice. No filmmaker has used color more radically. It was never decoration for Jarman. It was the entire medium.
