Resnais' formal experiments with time and memory had precise color correlatives. Hiroshima Mon Amour's black-and-white present and past, Last Year at Marienbad's drained grey aristocratic spaces, Muriel's jump-cut Boulogne. His later work embraced theatricality and color warmth. He understood that color could mark time's passage as precisely as any editorial strategy.
