Varda's documentary instinct shaped even her fiction films. Color observed rather than manufactured, the real light of real places. Cléo from 5 to 7's black-and-white world explodes into a brief color sequence to mark the shift from performance to authenticity. Her late documentaries Vagabond and The Gleaners and I used color with the same curiosity and warmth she brought to everything.
